Our Commitments
We protect the fjord and the surrounding natural environment.
Our operations run entirely on renewable energy.
Water is reused throughout the process, and waste is kept to a minimum.
A safe and inclusive workplace is a fundamental part of how we operate.
Traceability and transparency are maintained from mine to market.
HISTORY
From Past to Present
The story of the Gudvangen mine begins with geology. The Sogn–Voss anorthosite massif was first mapped by Norwegian geologists in the early 1900s, with detailed studies by Victor Goldschmidt and others confirming its rare purity.
In 1956, Gudvangen Stein AS was founded to explore and later extract this unique resource. Mining began underground during the 1960s, when light-coloured anorthosite was first produced for industrial use. Since then, production has evolved through new tunnels, modern equipment and cleaner energy — but always with respect for the mountain and fjord that define Gudvangen.
1916
Scientific mapping begins
Victor Moritz Goldschmidt starts the first documented investigations of anorthosite in Sogn for industrial use. His work helps define the purity, chemistry and industrial potential of the deposits.

1916–1919
The massif is mapped
Goldschmidt maps parts of the major anorthosite massifs along the Sognefjord. This period establishes the first scientific basis for understanding the scale and quality of the Sogn–Voss anorthosite belt.

1940–1945
Industrial interest intensifies
During the war years, anorthosite in Inner Sogn is investigated again for aluminium production based on acid leaching. A mine is opened in the northern part of the region, but sabotage ends the operation in 1945.

1956
Mining starts in Gudvangen
Regular extraction begins in Glashammaren in Nærøydalen. This marks the start of industrial anorthosite production in Gudvangen under Gabrolitt A/S.

1960s
From outcrop to industrial raw material
From around 1960, white anorthosite in Nærøydalen is used in a range of industrial applications. These include light road aggregate, concrete products, detergent powder and toothpaste.

1976–1982
Exploration confirms potential
Mapping, drilling and process studies strengthen the understanding of the Sogn anorthosite fields and confirm the potential of Gudvangen–Mjølfjell.

1988
New local ownership
Gudvangen Stein is established with local ownershipt. This marks a new phase in Nærøydalen, with production gradually moving from Glashammaren to Jordalsnuten.

1998–2000s
Delivery to stone wool industry starts
Over the following years, Gudvangen anorthosite becomes an important raw material for mineral wool and other industrial applications.

2021
Norwegian Anorthosite is established
Norwegian Anorthosite AS is founded as a dedicated company for sales, logistics and export of anorthosite products. This strengthens the commercial platform around the Gudvangen operation.

2025
Anorthosite Group is launched
The Anorthosite Group identity is introduced as the public facing platform for the business. It presents Gudvangen anorthosite as a high purity raw material for stone wool, glass, concrete, fiberglass and ceramics.

Life Inside the Mountain
The Gudvangen mine is more than tunnels and machinery.
It is a workplace shaped by generations of local knowledge and guided by modern precision.
Underground, electric drilling rigs and smart ventilation keep the air clean and noise levels low. Sensors monitor every movement and condition in real time, ensuring safety and steady output. Each shift combines human skill and digital control.

Precision in Every Step
Extraction takes place deep inside the mountain using controlled drilling and mechanical cutting. The rock is crushed and sorted underground before transport to the fjord. Automated systems and digital quality control ensure stable grain sizes, minimal dust and predictable chemistry in every shipment.
